Comments!!!
These are some of the comments/suggestion I got:
just show every execution of the commmands on the p.c. so that we can directly see what that perticular command do because it happens many times that tutor say sth. and by the time we reach our p.c. we do sth. different due to miss understanding of what tutor is saying and what we are getting. also the result came are not easy to interpret unless someone explain the outcome.just explaination don't help that we all have seen in our last semester.so it's a request that everycommand should be shown it's execution.
Reply: I will make sure that you get a demo of every
new thing I teach. But every commond :O. Thats a tough call.. I dont think we can cover all of them in one sem or even four years... There are some more Important things to be learmt in this course.. Moreover, Even I dont know
ALL the commands...

i think the length of the class should be shortend.i think lab classes are going on well. but in lab we are supposed to do somethin pratical . u were teachin us theory . plz give some tips on hacking ( bad side )
Reply: hmmmmm.... Well I personally disagree with that... I was letting you guys know the basics... Bcoz I beleive, its hard accomplish something in you have your basic straight... We will be having assignments from today's Lab... I hope you find it more "practical." But thanks for the suggestion... I will try working on it... Regarding hacking (bad side), I think its better for both the you guys and me to stay away from it...

Directory Structure
This is the Directory Structure analogy between Linux and Windows, I had given in the class.
/ -> My Computer
/home & /root -> C:\Document and Setting
/bin & /usr -> C:\Program Files
/lib -> C:\Program Files\Common Files
/dev -> C:\WINDOWS\system
/boot -> C:\WINDOWS\system32
/etc -> C:\Windows
This is not the exact Windows' DS. Its just to show an anology.
General info abt Directories (Folders) and DS can be found at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectoryLinux Stores its configuration in *.conf files and Windows in *.ini
Regedit is tool to access and edit all windows configuration files. Its available as c:\windows\regedit.exe
A good is read available at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regedit
File System
A File System keeps track of the various physical location of files in a Storage Device. The Device can a DVD, a CD, A hard disk or a USB Flash Drive.
Variuos Kinds of File System are:
FAT (Win), NTFS(Win), HFS(Mac), ext2(Linux), ISO 9660(CD ROM)
The Latest File System is winFS (For windows of course)
A good read for File System is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_system
How to find the info you need?
1) Check in your system's help:-
Windows: Start->Help and Support
Linux: man, info, apropos
2) Wikify it!:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page Search it on wikipedia...
3) Google it!
You can also have OS specific googling also...
Linux:
http://www.google.com/linux Windows:
http://www.google.com/microsoft.html4)Search on Blogspot...
http://www.blogspot.com Try making a blog too if you can.
5) Use Orkut:
http://www.orkut.com Orkut has many topic specific communities. You can ask questions there.
(If you think you can answer any questions, plz do)
If you are able to find an answer make sure you blog it... So its easier for others if they wanna solve a similar problem.
The Philosophy....
FAQzWhat is Hacking?Hacking is all about changing and 'not following' the norms. Neither the scope of hacking is restricted to computers nor its a technique. Its a way of life. Its a way of doing and looking at things. It can be done with a good or bad intention. Hacking done with bad intention is known as Cracking.
So what does hacking require?1) Deep Understanding of "The Norms"
2) Creativity
3) Ability to face consequences, if anything goes wrong.
What will be taught in this course?We will be teaching about computer hacking. We will make sure that you have a clear understanding of how things are "expected" to work. We will test you on your creativity and knowledge of how-things-work. You are also expected to accept the consequences if you create something useless. I will also be telling a few hacks I or someone else came up with. Plz let me know if you are able to found a hack. I will also be providing some links to things you wanna read...
Happy Hacking!!!
FAT32 vs NTFS
Hi,
Here is a link you wanna look at...
"The Link"I will discuss abt this in the Lab Session...
A4 students might want to go through this before they come to the class...
I will provide the notes after this class...
